I picked it up recently when it was half off. I had a lot of fun with it the other day when I was able to reproduce the synth lead with it from a song I like. Conversely, u-He's Zebra 2 is more difficult to learn, although the quality is certainly there. Yes, works great as a 64bit VST in Ableton.

FYI purchasing the plug-in separately also unlocks the native version (you just have to download a new regcode from your account). I have figured out things in SM2 that I simply didn't "get" in other interfaces. Not sure if it would work with Harmless/Harmor as a VST (Ive never tried loading any native FL plugins as VST though). It's one of my top three desert island synths, if I really had to choose. It has damned near every major synthesis method, it's pretty conventional in terms of functionality, has a flexible signal chain, has a nice UI, and the quality is incredibly good. (Says the guy with most of Music Radar's Top-30).ĮDIT: Honestly, if I had to pick a synth on which to learn, having used everything I've used, I would probably choose SynthMaster 2. You can always flip between multiple synths. I've been unable to grasp certain things in one UI, moved on to a different synth whose UI has made a certain element of sound design more accessible/intuitive for me, something clicks, and thereafter I can go back to other synths and back-port that knowledge into using the technique in those.

It's recommended to always install the VST file directly to the correct destination folder, rather than manually moving the DLL file afterwards. My experiences with synths have led me to the conclusion that it's not necessarily one or the other. Don't move the standalone or VST versions after installing (Windows only) VST plug-ins might stop working when the stand-alone application of the plug-in gets moved, renamed or uninstalled. Harmor wouldn't necessarily be my first choice for learning synthesis in general, but it's extremely powerful, and not that hard to learn. This is purely just a hobby for me (that I enjoy a lot). My goals: Learn sound design with a synth so I can make a wide variety of sounds that expresses my preferences and styles.Ībout me: I'm relatively new to making music and I have zero commercial ambition. I'm willing to stick with it if it's worth it in the long-run. Conversely, these DAWs can make 'real' musicians feel pretty disoriented. Shitty analogy: Right now, it's seeming like a choice between a 1985 Corvette in mint condition (Harmor) and a brand new 2018 Corvette (Serum) - they're both awesome but the 2018 is the obvious choice. Ableton has definitely some interesting options for assembling/cutting tracks from various MIDI/sound files. Thoughts of buying Serum keeps popping up in my head because of it's intuitive interface and the amount of resources it has. VERY VERY VERY limited learning resources. Sound design is painstakingly meticulous. I've learned a lot and got a lot better but.I still stink and the synth is still confusing for me.Ĭomplicated (and sometimes counter-intuitive) interface.

VST2 plugins don't have a default installation location. For 2 weeks straight I've been immersed in the Harmor demo: reading manuals, watching videos, and tweaking every option over and over again. In Live 10->Preferences->Plugins set the VST2 Custom Folder to ON and you want to set that VST2 Custom folder to the location containing Serum_圆4.dll This installs a Serum_圆4.dll file into that selected folder which is a VST2 plugin.

On a Windows machine, when you install Serum it asks for a VST 64-bit destination. Windows users will only have the option "VST Plugin Custom Folder", manually navigate to the location you installed Serum.

How can you know which free VSTs are worth installing We scoured the internet for the absolute best of the best free VST plugins. Today there are more great free plugins than ever before, but the freeware scene is always changing. In the past it was impossible to imagine that so many quality tools could be available at no cost. Make sure "Use AudioUnits/VST" are all checked and hit Rescan. Free VST Plugins are one of the most exciting things about mixing. To get Serum up and running in Ableton you need to check Ableton's AU/VST settings.įile and Folder (all Live versions until 10.1)/Plug-ins (Live 10.1 and later) Install Serum from the Splice desktop client (Windows users need to take note of the installation destination, by default under the User’s Documents folder).
